School Speech Contests

For many years the Rotary Club of Croydon & Montrose District has been very active in the Youth Service area. We sponsor students from local schools to participate in many exceptionally rewarding District run and sponsored projects. All of the Youth programs in District 9810 provide exceptionally valuable personal development opportunities for each participant. We run a full range of Primary Schools Speech Contests including the Year 10 Four-Way Test Speech Contest.

The Primary Schools Speech Contest for years 5 and 6 facilitated by Croydon & Montrose Rotary Club has always been a successful venture with the local Primary Schools. Most recently in 2019, three sessions were held in July, August and September, two in the Croydon area on the stage of the Melba College Theatrette, and one in the Montrose Town Centre for the Montrose area.

We had 3 from the schools in group B, and 2 in group A and C. A total of 14 schools were represented over three nights, with 2 or 3 students from each school, making a total of 36 wonderful speeches thoroughly enjoyed by all present. The children are improving each year, making it very difficult for the judges. Toastmaster judges were once again in attendance from Knox Toastmasters club in Boronia. It is a wonderful programme for our local young speakers who benefit immensely before their foray into secondary school. The Rotary year 10 Grand Final of the Rotary Four Way Test Speech Contest was fiercely contested once again in 2019 at Swinburne Auditorium, Wantirna Campus and hosted by the Rotary Club of Croydon & Montrose. From hotly contested heats and semi-finals to the final competition, the speeches got better and better. The contestants were certainly all winners. As well as Assistant Governor Geoffrey Logie-Smith, there were teachers, Rotarians, family members and other supporters (about 40 in attendance) to support the speakers and give them an audience. It was commented that the world is in good hands if these young people were anything to go by.

The Rotary Club of Croydon & Montrose looks forward to continue supporting these programs and similar again in the future.
